Robin Hickman
Associate Director, Transport Research, Halcrow; and Research Associate, Transport Studies Unit, University of Oxford.
Robin is the lead contributor to the transport theme on this website.
Robin leads the transport research sector at Halcrow and is also a Research Associate at the Transport Studies Unit, University of Oxford. He has wide experience in transport planning, policy research, urban planning and the project management of major multi-disciplinary studies. He is a visiting lecturer at University College London and completed his PhD in transport planning at UCL in 2007.
Robin has authored and contributed to a number of high profile policy research studies, including:
- Visioning and Backcasting for Transport Policy in London (VIBAT-London), for UrbanBuzz, the Higher Education Funding Council for England and the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills (www.vibat.org)
- Visioning and Backcasting for UK Transport Policy (VIBAT-UK), for the Department for Transport
- Settlement Patterns and the Demand for Travel, for the Commission for Integrated Transport
- How to Design a Sustainable Environment, part of the Intelligent Infrastructure Systems Foresight project for the Department for Trade and Industry
- Going to Town: Improving Town Centre Access (a companion guide to Planning Policy Statement 6), for the National Retail Planning Forum and Office of the Deputy Prime Minister
Current research studies include analysis of transport and reduced CO2 emissions in Asia and north America, and integrated transport and urban planning in London. He is a frequent speaker at conferences on transport planning issues and has published over 60 articles, book chapters and conference papers. He gave evidence to the UK House of Commons Environmental Audit Committee on Transport and Climate Change in 2006.
