David Orr
David is Director of his urban design consulting practice, and has many years experience in developing landscape and urban design solutions on a variety of scales in the UK and overseas.
David is the lead contributor to the public space theme on this website.
David is a CABE Space Enabler, writing CABE Space’s Public Realm Strategies briefing paper; he is a Design Enabler for Creating Excellence, and is mentor to the IHIE/PRIAN Certificate course in Public Realm and an accredited assessor for Building for Life, the national standard for well-designed homes and neighbourhoods.
Previously David was a Technical Director at Mouchel where he led input to street and public realm design guides, and was project director for English Heritage’s ‘Streets for All’ practical case studies. David directed Mouchel’s involvement in masterplans, urban regeneration design, street enhancement and public realm design, design guidance and landscape architecture across.
His career has spanned both engineering and architectural consultancy practices and local authorities. He formerly managed the masterplanning of a new urban village of 3,000 homes in Wales and CABE’s, ‘Paving the Way’ report for Alan Baxter and Associates.
Prior to this at WS Atkins he was involved as project landscape architect on Trafalgar Square improvements and managed the design work for the Strand in London (winner of a LGN street design award). At HLM Landscape he was involved with the external design of hospitals, colleges, schools and defence establishments after completing periods at both Richmond and Newham in London.
