Brian Mark

Brian Mark, Director of Sustainability at Fulcrum Consulting is a Building Services engineer with 30 years experience. 

Brian is the lead contributor on energy aspects for this website.

For most of this time Brian has specialised in all engineering systems involved in housing, both new and the problems of older stock and the people who live in them.

For the last 10 years he has concentrated on sustainable low and zero carbon energy design which can only be achieved when integrated with efficient water and waste management of both individual buildings and at masterplanning/Regional level.

Brian presently advises the Government on all scales of renewable energy technology via his membership of the Renewables Advisory Board. He is a member of the Technical Steering Group for the intended revisions to the Code for Sustainable Homes and the Energy supply section of the Zero Carbon Delivery Hub and is the CIBSE representative on the Building Regulations Pt L revision Industry Advisory Group.

As a Chartered Biologist and Engineer, a Member of the Institute of Biology and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers, Brian has a unique background that combines extensive scientific knowledge with practical building experience with a heavy emphasis on housing in all it’s forms.

This background has lead Brian into the emerging field of Sustainable Engineering Masterplanning in which he has become a leading expert advising Central Government, The Welsh Assembly, professional institutions, National Housebuilders, developers and planning authorities on strategic technical aspects of achieving national policy and sustainable communities at every scale.

Brian is presently Director in Charge of the masterplanning/detailed design of several major mixed use projects comprising over 95,000 new homes (pre-credit crunch at least) alongside the non-residential facilities and infrastructure to support them.  Over 50,000 of these homes and the mix of other buildings provided with them are to be Zero Carbon to the challenging, constantly changing new technical requirements for sustainable communities.
